Community Organizing is a way to achieve social change through collective action for the benefit of the Hispanic community and the general community. At Progreso Community Center (PCC), we believe that the people affected by an issue are capable of identifying needs and taking actions to achieve solutions. PCC constantly listens to the concerns and needs of Hispanic community members to determine together when community organizing efforts are needed to address specific issues. Since its founding, PCC has continued to grow, with around 160 registered (Hispanic) members, and around 50 registered (non-Hispanic) allies. PCC holds monthly membership meetings in which members participate in planning and vote to make decisions about PCC activities. Civic Engagement and Advocacy - PCC communicates with authorities at local, state and national levels to raise awareness of important issues affecting the Hispanic community. The following 3 campaigns led to the founding of PCC: Immigrant Women Workers 2005-2007Day Laborers 2006Taquería stand owners and employees 2006PCC AchievementsPCC Achievements in the area of Community Organizing, 2006-Present: Fiscal sponsorship agreement with Nashville Peace and Justice Center [a 501(c)(3) organization] for PCC to operate as a non-profit organization. (June 2006) Creation of bilingual website (June 2006)Start-up grant funding received from Sparkplug Foundation (December 2006)Opening of PCC's first facility (approximately 900 square feet of space), located on Nolensville Road near Thompson Lane, in the heart of Nashville's Hispanic community (January 2007).PCC incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in the state of Tennessee (June 2007). Opening of PCC's second facility (approximately 2,000 square feet of space) , located on Allied Drive off of Nolensville Road, also in the heart of Nashville's Hispanic community (February 2008).
