At Progreso Community Center (PCC), we believe
that knowledge is power and must not be monopolized
by a few.
Everyone has valuable knowledge and skills
to share with others.
Knowledge is a tool for people to free themselves
from exploitation and oppression.
Thus, PCC places emphasis on community education
as a means to share knowledge
and empower the community.
Below are some highlights of our continual
community education programs:
• A forum on employment discrimination, sexual harassment and
housing discrimination with presentations by Southern Poverty Law
Center and Tennessee Human Rights Commission (March 2006)
• Informational presentations and a community forum on
the 2006 comprehensive immigration reform proposal
(May-June 2006)
• Periodic community health education workshops (June 2006-present)
• Initiation of first English class program
with volunteer English teachers (February-November 2007)
• Community education forum on discrimination and
sexual harassment with a presentation by
Southern Poverty Law Center (December 2007)
• New English class program in collaboration with
the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute (TFLI),
with support of a grant from Dollar General Foundation
to TFLI (started May 2008)
• Inauguration of the PCC Voces de Esperanza (Voices of Hope)
Computer Lab with 5 computers, dedicated to the
group of women workers who donated the funds to PCC.
They donated the funds from the settlement of their
discrimination and sexual harassment case,
in which PCC had supported them (May 2008)
(see Community Organizing page for more information).
• Implementation of computer education program,
with computer classes in Spanish
and Internet Café for public use (started May 2008)
